Episode 183 – The One Where We Boldly Bleach Our Backsides In Barcelona

In This Week’s Show, episode 183, we visit Barcelona, where the dogs have no noses, to drink 11 year old snake-face ale.

In This Week’s Show, episode 183, we visit Barcelona, where the dogs have no noses, to drink 11-year-old snake-face ale.

Now, grab a beer and help us test the god hypothesis — because, while Monabol (a Philippine god of weaving (Hugo Weaving?)) hasn’t struck us down yet, we are trying his patience!

Shea’s Life Lesson

This week I learned why the anti-vaxxer’s 2-year-old was crying… Midlife crisis…

Jenn’s Actual Lesson

Monabol is only one of many gods of weaving for the Ifugaos people. His father was the god of weaving textiles and his mother was a goddess of weaving baskets. Not a lot of theological imagination in parts of the Philippines.

But before we get to all that, let’s have a beer!

Hot Shots!

Aaron – Surprise, don’t take unregulated-even-in-Mexico “natural cures” for acne and cancer… especially if they’re drugs made from rattlesnake-face. Because fuck your faith in humanity, we live in a world where the CDC has a Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report… Yeah, weekly. A Texas man and a Kansas man are both suffering from a serious case of stupid after eating pills made from dehydrated, ground up, rattlesnake. Luckily one can’t easily be invenomed through consumption of snake face. Unfortunately, one can acquire uber-salmonella and shit one’s self so severely the neighbors call the CDC. For their part, the CDC has warned people that eating snake-fake is fucking stupid and you really, really shouldn’t do it.

Steve – Holy gut-bomb batman. Don Gorske of Wisconsin has the receipts to prove that over the course of 46 years, he has consumed 30,000 big macs. The 64-year-old has broken the world record by eating two of the sandwiches a day, with only a few misses. Despite his crazy diet, his cholesterol is only 140, so he’s my kind of guy. – http://bit.ly/2jMEiQk

Aaron’s Patron Hot Shot – Available now at http://patreon.com/w4w- Professional fear monger and fact ignorer Dave Grossman, America’s favorite professor of “killology,” is spending his old age spewing fear and bullshit in seminars like the NRA’s recent “Sheepdogs! The Bulletproof Mind of the Armed Citizen” which doesn’t give you an adamantium brain, but instead instructs one to bristle with guns at all times to be protected from these damn kids these days, or as he calls us the “Assassination Generation” — also one of his books, because rhyming = smart. Vying for old-man rant of the year, he explains that it’s “the sick movies and the sick TV shows and especially the sick video games around the planet that are creating sick, sick kids.” Because the only thing that stops a bad kid with an XBox controller is a good guy with all the guns.

Steve’s Patron Hot Shot – Available now at http://patreon.com/w4w – What does 11 years of gathering 42 plus thousand signatures get you? Jack-fucking-shit when those signatures were collected to “get prayer back in school”. Dumbfuck, Clyde Easter (yep his real name), was pissed when he wasn’t allowed to say a prayer at a veteran’s day event as a public school in 2006, so he wasted a ton of the short time he has left (he’s 93 for fuck’s sake) gathering signatures to give to the supreme court (currently in the hands of his also dumb-ass congressman). http://bit.ly/2I6bAsm

The protest-ith-too-much Christian hate-mongers over at the Alliance Defending Freedom have the sadz from their Aryan-A, to their zealotus-Zed. (joke pause because I said zed)

Unlike WyoAIDS.org, which is an Amazon Smile Charity with a link in the show notes, the ADF will not be getting any sweet, smiley, dollars. “But why?” you might ask… if you’re FOX News.

Because the ADF does things like push anti-trans bathroom bills, sponsor gay adoption bans, and champion Mississippi’s “Live & Let Live” bill, that allows one to discriminate against anyone whose marriage you’re not a part of, but still somehow get to judge. And so the ADF is rightfully listed as an anti-LGBTQ hate group by the SPLC. And since Amazon uses the SPLC as a filter for their charitable efforts the ADF, Family Research Council, and their ilk, can fuck right off. From FOX they are apparently thinking about sueing Amazon to force the retail giant to make them a gay wedding cake… opp, nope… to force Amazon to allow them to use the bathroom their god identifies… nope… to force Amazon to support.

Steve – Surprise: Christians have the most abortions. – http://bit.ly/2I5zO65

Guess what? When Christians do honest research, they get results that they likely didn’t want. Amazing what happens when you don’t start with the conclusion and look for evidence to match it. Lifeway Research (subtitled Biblical Solutions for Life) did a survey of 1038 women taking care to match national totals for ethnicity, age, income, and religion. Turns out that 43% of the women who had an abortion, where attending church once a month or more. Of those, 49% agree that their pastor’s teachings on forgiveness don’t’ apply to abortions. 54% agree that churches over-simplify decisions re pregnancy options, and 45% think the churches give inaccurate advice for same. Finally, 70% of those who had an abortion said they’re Christians, and ⅓ of the Protestants are Baptist.

A new working paper by researchers at Yale University finds that the kind of people more likely to believe stories that are literally “fake news” are those who believe in delusions, are dogmatic in their thinking, and are just flat-out religious fundamentalists.

The paper titled “Reduced Analytic and Actively Open-Minded Thinking Help to Explain the Link between Belief in Fake News and Delusionality, Dogmatism, and Religious Fundamentalism”

Date Written: May 3, 2018

Abstract

Delusion-prone individuals may be more likely to accept even delusion-irrelevant implausible ideas because of their tendency to engage in less analytic and actively open-minded thinking. Consistent with this suggestion, two online studies with over 1000 participants demonstrated that delusion-prone individuals display an increased belief in fake news, which often features implausible content, and that this increase was partially explained by cognitive style. Exploratory analyses showed that dogmatic individuals and religious fundamentalists were also more likely to believe fake news and that these relationships were fully explained by cognitive style. Our findings suggest that existing interventions on analytic and actively open-minded thinking might be leveraged to help prevent the deleterious effects of belief in fake news.

What they did:

Participants took a number of evaluations including rating a number of articles, real and fake, on a scale of 1=“Not at all accurate,”4=“Very Accurate,” completed a shortened version of the actively open-minded thinking scale, a measure of dogmatism, the religious fundamentalism scale, and finally the Peters et al. Delusion Inventory (example item: “Do you ever feel as if there is a conspiracy against you.”).

These findings make a lot of sense. The paper shows evidence that “suggests that religious fundamentalists may engage in less analytic and actively open-minded thinking.” So it’s almost like if you believe in things that have no factual evidence and you’re more likely to trust in other things that have no factual evidence… Who’d thunk?

Hemant Mehta sums it perfectly over on Patheos, quote “They already believe in huge amount of nonsensical garbage — a talking snake, a young Earth, God watches over you, Jesus performed miracles, etc. — in large part because they live in bubbles where those stories feel convincing despite not measuring up to reality. When pastors tell you those lies with conviction, and a sacred book reiterates the lies, and your parents teach you that doubting the lies could lead you down the path to eternal punishment, it makes a lot of sense that news articles that appear legitimate would just be taken as gospel.”

I’d love to tell you this was all news to us but as I’m sure most of our listeners are thinking, NO SHIT. With this information we progress in a way where we can all be analytical and learn for ourselves, right? I wish, but no. Apparently, the researchers say it’s possible if those groups focus on “the search for alternative explanations and the use of evidence to revise beliefs” and analytic thinking. But who are we kidding, they can’t do that.

Religious fundamentalists already have their own predetermined ideas and conclusions before ever coming across any evidence.

As Mehta says, quote “A lot of skeptics have said religious fundamentalism is a form of mental child abuse. That looks to be the case here. By teaching kids to accept fiction as fact because it’s promoted by their religion and authority figures in their lives, those kids will struggle down the road when it comes to figuring out what is and isn’t a lie.”

Just when you think GOOP is about as stupid for your health and sanity as you can get, more and better (worse?) dum dums come along and surprise you! Let me lay some crazy on the table: Starting in 2007, a man named Louis Daniel Smith operated an online business called Project GreenLife or PGL. Based in Ashland, OR, PGL sold basically one product: the Miracle Mineral Solution (MMS).

To kick this off and get in the true spirit of things, let’s hear quickly from Mr. Daniel Smith himself:

https://youtu.be/sMhea1-vjiY (until 1:15)

So, yep. The answer to the change we all need in our lives…or whatever, is MMS. Sounds reasonable, right? There’s a miracle cure being touted online by a man with no credentials, suspect facial hair and lots of words that don’t mean anything.

The video that we just heard from was filmed in February of 2015 in preparation for a summit in Barcelona the following month. Unfortunately, Smith was not able to be in attendance. He was on trial in a Federal Court on charges of conspiracy, smuggling, selling misbranded drugs and defrauding the United States.

Ok, let’s take a step back and investigate the whos and the whats:

Let’s start with the Genesis II Church of Health & Healing: it is a quasi-religious, 100% cult group of credulous ding dongs who are possibly Smith’s and MSS’s most ardent supporters.

Genesis 2 Church – https://genesis2church.is/

From their website: ‘We were formed to serve MANKIND directly. We want to bring health to the world. We will also serve MANKIND in other ways. We intend to help MANKIND extract himself from a world of death to a world of the living over the coming years. It is not a religious goal; it is a realistic goal of having us all live in a decent world, a world where the brutality has finally been overcome, where men no longer kill other men for financial gain.’ The number one benefit of being a member listed on their page is ‘1. Protection against vaccinations, unwanted x-rays, scans, or health insurance mandated by human authority. We are a church and it is against our church’s beliefs. People have already used their membership cards to keep from being vaccinated, and from going through scans.’

Good, good… They also have a variety of ‘sacraments’. Any guesses as to what their #1 maybe? That’s right! MMS (Miracle Mineral Solution)!!!

MMS was first ‘developed’ in 1996 by a snake-oil charlatan and ex-Scientologist named Jim Humble, who also happened to be the founder of Genesis II Church of Health & Healing. According to ‘Bishop’ Humble. He discovered the ‘healing properties’ while on a gold mining expedition to South America. What he found, per his website: “it has proven to restore partial or full health to hundreds of thousands of people suffering from a wide range of disease, including cancer, diabetes, hepatitis A, B, C, Lyme disease, MRSA, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, HIV/AIDS, malaria, autism, infections of all kinds, arthritis, high cholesterol, acid reflux, kidney or liver diseases, aches and pains, allergies, urinary tract infections, digestive problems, high blood pressure, obesity, parasites, tumors and cysts, depression, sinus problems, eye disease, ear infections, dengue fever, skin problems, dental issues, problems with prostate (high PSA), erectile dysfunction and the list goes on. This is by far not a comprehensive list. I know it sounds too good to be true, but according to feedback I have received over the last 20 years, I think it’s safe to say MMS has the potential to overcome most diseases known to mankind.” http://bit.ly/2jMEj6Q

During the time he founded the sorta-church he also began wearing a hat with a large crystal that rested on his forehead and has stated he is a billion year old god from the Andromeda galaxy.

Chicago-based Kerri Rivera, who operates as ‘wellness expert’ on childhood ailments, touts MMS as a cure for autism, claiming over 100 children have been cured of autism with this regiment. Her brief bio on her FB page: Kerri Rivera is the driving force behind CD Autism, a grassroots movement dedicated to improving the lives of children on the autism spectrum.

Back to Daniel Smith who, standing on the shoulders of looney swindlers, took Humble’s ‘discovery’ and turned it into the business Project GreenLife. So…what is it? Per the Justice Dept press release: MMS is a mixture of sodium chlorite and water. Sodium chlorite is an industrial chemical used as a pesticide and for hydraulic fracking and wastewater treatment. The product instructs consumers to mix the 28 percent sodium chlorite solution with an acid such as citrus juice. This mixture produces chlorine dioxide, a potent bleach used for stripping textiles and industrial water treatment.

Oh, wait, what?! Yeah, it’s BLEACH. From the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warning – http://bit.ly/2Kc0NcA

“The product, when used as directed, produces an industrial bleach that can cause serious harm to health. …High oral doses of this bleach, such as those recommended in the product labeling, can cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and symptoms of severe dehydration.”

Consumers of M.M.S. are told to mix sodium chlorite with citric acid to produce chlorine dioxide. This is due to the fact that concentrated chlorine dioxide is explosive, and therefore illegal to ship to customers, so they must complete the finishing chemical process themselves. Customers are advised to take several drops per day, inside an acidic fruit drink. They are sometimes warned by sellers (sometimes not) that they should expect to become extremely ill soon after using it and that their symptoms of poisoning just indicate that the “healing” has begun.

The instructions also stated that despite a risk of possible brain damage, the product might still be appropriate for pregnant women or infants who were seriously ill. Smith and his colleagues obtained the sodium chlorite by creating fictional online “water purification” and “wastewater treatment” businesses.

Remember Kerri Rivera? Her ‘grassroots program’ CD autism actually stands for Chlorine Dioxide autism and advocates to dose autistic children with prepared enemas. In addition to the bleach enemas, she recommends a “72-2” protocol that involves making children drink dilute bleach every two hours for 72 hours. Diarrhea caused by these poisonous ‘treatments’ is lauded as “detox diarrhea”.

“Amazing as it might seem, when used correctly, the immune system can use this killer to only attack those germs, bacteria, viruses, molds, and other microorganisms that are harmful to the body…

“It has been used in stockyards to kill pathogens on meat, and on slaughtered chickens; it has been used to sterilize hospital floors and benches, and to kill pathogens in water works without killing friendly bacteria for over 70 years…

“If you notice diarrhea or even vomiting that is not a bad sign… It is not real diarrhea as the body is just cleaning out, and it is not caused by bacteria or virus. When the poison is gone, the diarrhea is gone.”

This is truly only scratching the surface of this extremely dangerous group. One bright spot, which will hopefully lead to more arrests, involved the prosecution of Daniel Smith. In May 2015 he was convicted and sentenced to 51 months in prison. (Per a letter to his followers, his first night in prison he met a fellow inmate who cured himself of prostate cancer in 2011 with, guess what?) Unsurprisingly his bleach-groupies have started change.org petitions, blogs and renamed much of the business in an effort to clear his name and keep the product active. They have gone underground in a variety of other countries in order to avoid the US’s crackdown. There are also multiple websites with information on how to write to and encourage Smith while he languishes in prison, a martyr of the war on drugs and Big Pharma.

University of Toronto researchers have developed a cool handheld skin printer! And no, that’s not a thing that prints on skin, it’s a thing that prints actual skin… like that thing, they used on Hawkeye in Age of Ultron, except not the size of a room. Handheld.

The team believes this to be the first device of its kind, as the blue, lego-esk, rubber-band-gun looking thing will print layers of actual human flesh in-situ atop gaping wounds both covering them and helping them heal all within two minutes or less! Take that Pizza Hut! The soylent gun will print all three layers of skin, which is great because tri-dermal grafts are difficult, painful, and often work out for shit. Meanwhile, proving that everything healthcare related is better outside America, the flesh printer weighs less than a kilo, requires minimal training to use, and eliminates the cell washing and incubation stages required by current bioprinters.

“Most current 3-D bioprinters are bulky, work at low speeds, are expensive and are incompatible with clinical application,” explains Associate Professor Axel Guenther.

The team hopes to work on more in vivo studies soon, but ultimately seeks to revolutionize burn care by printing us cool artificial bodies!
